The refreshing & uplifting oil
What is Lemon oil?
Lemon essential oil, also called citrus limon, is extracted from lemon peels by a process called cold press. Lemon oil’s main compound is d-limonene which gives lemon it’s citrus scent. Lemon oil is used in many areas around the world and is typically grown in Europe and the US. It takes about 45 lemons to make one 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil.
There are so many uses for lemon! It just may be the most versatile oil. It is used often in cleaning because of it’s incredible disinfecting power. Lemon is also widely used as a flavoring in food and as a popular, refreshing scent in personal care products and air fresheners. But, be leery of anything containing lemon “fragrance”, this is a clue that it is made with a synthetic compound. Always use the PURE stuff!
How should I use Lemon essential oil?
Apply it topically, diffuse or take internally.
I suggest to always dilute lemon with your favorite carrier oil before topical use.
AVOID sun exposure for 12 hours after applying lemon topically.
Use lemon to maintain health
- For kidney and gall stone issues, take internally in a glass of water (dispersed first) or empty capsule to detoxify the body.
- Take internally or apply to the ears and ankles daily to help detox, cleanse the lymphatic and balance PH.
- Take internally to help relieve heartburn and reflux.
- Enhance concentration and ease stress by diffusing or inhaling aromatically.

Use lemon to Clean your home
- Make your own easy all-purpose cleaner with Lemon essential oil. With just water, white vinegar and some drops of essential oils, you have a really great cleaner! Check out this one from draxe.com: http://draxe.com/homemade-melaleuca-lemon-household-cleaner/
- Add some drops to your washer dispenser or dryer sheets for fresh smelling laundry.
- Get rid of sticky residues with just a drop of lemon essential oil. * This doesn’t work well on plastic surfaces though because of lemon’s ability to break down plastic. It will make the plastic surface look “cloudy”. Believe me, I have tried it!

Use lemon to brighten & clear your skin
d-Limonene helps to treat skin discoloration and lighten skin. It can also protect against skin cancer. (R) Lemon oil can also smooth and rejuvenate any cracked or dry areas. Lemon oil helps to dissolve oils and reduce oil production on the skin, making it a good choice for the treatment of acne.
- Try rubbing a few drops of lemon oil diluted with coconut oil on to the bottoms of your feet every night for soft, moisturized skin!
- Add a drop of lemon to jojoba or fractionated coconut oil and use nightly as a lightening skin serum. Do this step LAST, after your moisturizer.
- Mix a few drops of lemon oil with jojoba or fractionated coconut oil to clear skin blemishes. Apply as the LAST step over acne prone areas.
Complimentary oils
Lemon blends well with these oils: basil, peppermint, rosemary, lavender and sandalwood.
Facts about Lemon
As with any citrus, Lemon essential oil can break down plastic, so use glass containers to store homemade cleaning products. If you choose to add lemon to your drinking water, make sure you use glass, not plastic. (See my article on using essential oils in your drinking water.)
Important to know…
Always use caution when using citrus oils topically. They make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Certain compounds in citrus oils can cause photo-sensitivity which can lead to a greater risk of sunburn, pigmentation or even blistering with prolonged sun exposure. AVOID sun exposure for at least 12 hours after topical application. Any skin treatment product with lemon oil should be used at night to avoid photo-sensitivity.
Oils that are generally considered photosensitive are: orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot.
